Dear keen for Hammers Euro success to continue

KRC Genk v West Ham United – UEFA Europa League Group H – Cegeka Arena – Thursday (5:45pm) – Preview

West Ham United head to Belgium defending a 100 per cent UEFA Europa League Group H record and safe in the knowledge that another victory over KRC Genk will seal their progress to the knockout stages with two games to spare.

Having featured throughout the Hammers successful 1965 Cup Winners Cup campaign, former frontman, Brian Dear has enjoyed watching the East Londoners latest group attempting to emulate their heroics from 56 years ago: “West Ham playing and winning in Europe is very special,” he told Yellow Sport.

“It provides a different sort of challenge in different environments. The supporters love the ties. They responded for us and they are again now. Although the matches aren’t always as tough as the Premier League, winning in Europe lifts the profile of the football club as a whole.

“I see several similarities between our team from 1965 and these boys. The enthusiasm and will to win. Of course, we had the likes of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, but this team has plenty of quality as well, all keen to make a name for themselves just as we did.”

Dear continued: “We have largely looked pretty comfortable during the opening three group matches. I’d expect a tougher test when we face the teams for a second time. Genk did well during the first half at the London Stadium. No doubt, they would have taken heart from that and will want to build on it.

“But ultimately, we beat them 3-0 at home a couple of weeks ago. I know Genk have picked up domestically, scoring twelve goals in their last two matches. But I think we will be too strong for them, securing our progress and setting us up nicely ahead of Liverpool on Sunday.”

Brian Dear’s prediction: KRC Genk 1-3 West Ham United
Jeevesie’s prediction: KRC Genk 0-1 West Ham United
