Dear urges Hammers to be up for the cup

Stockport County v West Ham United – Emirates FA Cup Third Round – Edgeley Park – Monday 8pm – Preview

Brian Dear insisted that West Ham United must treat the Emirates FA Cup with respect and go all out when they visit Vamarama National League promotion-hopefuls, Stockport County, on Monday evening.

The resolute Hammers have largely been in decent form during the first half of the season and remain on course for a top-half finish in the Premier League. Nevertheless, Dear would like to see them “have a go” in the cup, believing they could make an impact and reach the latter stages of the competition.
“Listen, we should beat Stockports and I expect us to, but we must take them seriously and treat them and the cup with respect,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“There’s always a shock in the cup. Stockport haven’t been quite as consistent in their league of late but will see this as an opportunity to test themselves with no pressure on them. We must go strong, show our quality and get the job done. Keep the momentum going, build on what has already been achieved on the pitch this season.”

Dear continued: “We’ve had some good results against some of the top teams this season – most recently at Everton. Surely, that suggests on our day we can challenge the best and have a good run in the cup. It would be such a boost to get to a final, especially in these tough times.

“But we can’t be thinking that far ahead just yet. Stockport are immediately in front of us and we should treat them the same way as we would a Premier League club. West Ham has ‘previous’ where cup shocks are concerned. We must be professional and make sure we are not on the wrong end Monday evening.”

Brian Dear’s prediction: Stockport County 0-4 West Ham United
