Dear urges Hammers to take the cup seriously

Everton v West Ham United – Carabao Cup – Goodison Park – Wednesday, September 30 (7:45pm) – Preview

Brian Dear has urged West Ham United to used Wednesday’s Carabao Cup fourth-round tie wisely as they look to build momentum following recent improved performances.

The Hammers were beaten at Arsenal despite dominating the match but followed up by dismantling Wolverhampton Wanderers by four unanswered goals at the London Stadium on Sunday evening.

“We’ve looked good in the last two matches and shouldn’t write this game off in preference of the league,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“Everton are going well on all fronts and will fancy themselves, particularly at Goodison. But that doesn’t mean to say we can’t go there and show the same spirit and determination from the last two matches.

“We need to keep the momentum going. Wolves will testify, this group are more than capable, particularly now we’ve discovered a bit of ruthlessness in front of goal.

“As I said, Everton are a different animal at the moment. But in a one-off cup tie, anything is possible.”

Dear heaped praise on Jarrod Bowen who continued to impress with a brace against Wolves: “The boy is so enthusiastic – It’s really refreshing.

“He’s a willing runner with plenty of skill. Along with Tomas Soucek, he provides us with something extra. It was terrific to see them giving the Wolves defence so many problems at the weekend.”

Returning the focus to the Goodison Park clash, Dear added: “We did what we had to do against Charlton and Hull City. Facing Everton is no different. We must come back knowing we’ve done everything we can in trying to progress, whatever the outcome.”

Brian Dear’s prediction: Everton 2-1 West Ham United
