Dear wary of a tough Tottenham test for Hammers

Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United – Carabao Cup Quarter-Final – Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – Wednesday (7:45pm) – Preview

Brian Dear is concerned that West Ham United are running into rivals, Tottenham Hotspur at the wrong time.

The pair go head to head at the last-eight stage of the Carabao Cup in the north of the capital and while the Hammers have struggled to replicate their early season form of late, Tottenham has positively flourished under the guidance of Antonio Conte.

“Let’s be honest, It was always going to happen,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“Antonio Conte wasn’t going to put up with a troubled dressing room. He’s a great manager, a winner. He was always going to demand more from the Spurs squad.

“Tottenham’s game against Liverpool was an example of how far they have come in a short space of time. And to be fair, I still don’t think he’s seen the full potential of what he has. Undoubtedly, he will shape his own group. One or two of these will go in January. But at the moment, they are performing what he has asked and Spurs are getting results.”

Dear reiterated that this doesn’t mean West Ham are out of it: “Absolutely not,” the former frontman added.

“We all know exactly what this West Ham side is capable of. We are a bit up and down at the moment. We’ve looked a little jaded. But there’s a lot at stake and it’s a derby. I’d expect us to match them, although there’s not much in it at the moment.

“Our problem is in attack. We need to rediscover our ruthless streak. We know the players have it in them and this would be the perfect opportunity to hit back, make a statement and take another step towards a major cup final.

“As I said, it’s an important derby. It always is when we play Spurs. David Moyes will have used the unscheduled break wisely and will have the group fired up.

“It’s probably not the best time to face Tottenham because they are looking good at the moment – They have improved tremendously. But I’ll stick my neck out. I think we will get through, but it might go all the way to penalties.”

Brian Dear’s prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 West Ham United (West Ham win on penalties)
Jeevesie’s prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 West Ham United
