Dear’s tipping Hammers for Euro glory

AZ Alkmaar v West Ham United – UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final second leg -AZ Stadion – Thursday (8pm) – Preview

Brian Dear believes West Ham United will see off AZ Alkmaar and reach their first European final in 47 years when they head to the Netherlands on Thursday evening.

The East Londoners hold a slender 2-1 lead from the first leg at the London Stadium. Second-half goals from Saïd Benrahma and Michail Antonio cancelled out Tijjani Reijnders’ shock first-half opener for the Dutchmen.

“We are safe from relegation, we have nothing else to concentrate on or worry about,” Dear told Yellow Sport.

“I think Alkmaar proved what a good side they are in the first leg, but we have more quality and I fully expect that to shine through at the AZ Stadion.

“A number of the squad were given a rest on Sunday at Brentford. There are no excuses. We are ready and must now prove that we are better than Alkmaar. It is as simple as that.”

Dear continued: “I’ve often spoken about our Cup Winner’s Cup winning team. We are remembered for what we achieved almost sixty years on. This group have an opportunity to enjoy the same limelight. I hope they can get through the semi-final and set up a memorable finale for the season in Prague.

“When West Ham United moved from the Boleyn Ground to the London Stadium, we were sold a dream of moving to the next level. As far as the supporters are concerned, that means competing and winning trophies. This is a great chance. We’ve waited long enough.”
