Decisions for Molesley ahead of Salford clash

Salford City v Southend United – Sky Bet League Two – The Peninsula Stadium – Tuesday 7:45pm – Preview

It’s a case of back to the drawing board for Mark Molesley after winless Southend United slipped to their fourth defeat in six Sky Bet League Two outings against Cheltenham Town at Roots Hall Stadium on Saturday.

And with the rock-bottom Blues now heading to Salford City on Tuesday evening, Molesley must decide on the best formation for his limited squad as they look to draw a line under their wretched start to the campaign.

Speaking to after the Cheltenham setback, Molesley explained: “We’ll analyse the game more deeply now it’s over and we’ll look on Monday to see how everyone arrives fitness-wise, and we’ll want to put our best foot forward for the coming game [against Salford].

“I think [3-4-3] is a good formation for us. It gets a lot of good players in the right positions. We didn’t execute it well today and we need to be better, but I don’t think it’s anything to do with formations or tactics. We just come up short today physically, mentally, tactically.

“We were off it a little bit today, which is disappointing because we’ve had a couple of good weeks, but today was a stark reminder that we’ve got to keep working hard and we’ve got to be better than we were today. We’ll learn the lessons from today and move on quickly.”

Molesley might call upon the services of Arsenal loanee, James Olayinka. The midfielder penning a loan deal with the Blues until late January.

John White and Alan McCormack could feature after returning to training last week. Simeon Akinola remains sidelined.
