Colchester United v Newport County – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Friday (7:45pm) – Preview
Suprised – Delighted – Relieved – Take your pick. Ray Crawford enjoyed a catalogue of emotions after Colchester United had stunned in-form Exeter City to relieve some of the pressure on head coach, Hayden Mullins.
Goals from Sylvester Jasper, Noah Chilvers and Freddie Sears proved decisive as the U’s ended the Grecians fifteen-match unbeaten sequence: “I was a bit critical of the boys before the game – I’m delighted they’ve responded so well,” Crawford told Yellow Sport.
“The result should give everyone connected with the club a huge boost. But we have to use it as a springboard – we have to push on.
“I don’t think we should run before we can walk. Colchester need to build up a head of steam. But this has set us up nicely ahead of the Newport game.”
Indeed, victory for the U’s over the Welshmen starts to put a different complexion on the Sky Bet League Two table: “We’ve got to make up some ground,” Crawford added.
“Having dropped points against sides towards the bottom, we are now under pressure to pull a rabbit or two out of the hat. Newport are going well, but it will be in the back of their mind that we have ended Exeter’s run. On top of that, they’ve recently lost to Swindon and drew with Crawley. This might be a good time to face them?
“I remain confident that this group of players have it in them if they get the mindset right. But ultimately, the belief to win football matches has to come from within. Tuesday night’s display should tell the Colchester players all they need to know on that score.”
Ray Crawford’s prediction: Colchester United 1-1 Newport County
Jeevesie’s prediction: Colchester United 1-2 Newport County
