Essex v Derbyshire – LV Insurance County Championship – Cloudfm County Ground, Chelmsford – Summary
Derbyshire 146 and 251
Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bowl
Essex won by an innings and 15 runs
Essex emphatically returned to LV Insurance County Championship winning ways with a devastating display to blitz Derbyshire in a weather-affected encounter at Chelmsford.
Incredibly, Essex’s innings and 15-run victory came despite losing the first day in its entirety due to the wet conditions along with several further stoppages in what remained.
Essex made up for lost time with a batting masterclass, led by centuries from skipper Tom Westley and Dan Lawrence.
Nick Browne and Alastair Cook were also in good nick. The pair put on 137 for the first wicket – Browne first to go after scoring 59. Cook followed seven balls later for 58 – Billy Stanlake claiming both victims for the visitors.
But a 221-run stand between Westley and Lawrence carried Essex clear. Westley eventually fell on 106, while Lawrence’s unbeaten 152 off 133 deliveries included sixteen fours and six 6s.
The declaration came after seventy-six overs with Essex having amassed 412/3. Entre, Simon Harmer.
The off-break bowler struck devastatingly, claiming a career-best 9/80 as Derbyshire were skittled for 146. Brooke Guest offered some form of resistance with 49 off 116 balls before the visitors’ were forced to follow on.
Harmer took his match figures to 12/202, while Jamie Porter (3/41) and Sam Cook (3/45) ensured the hosts’ second victory of an otherwise, to date, frustrating campaign.
Guest followed up his 49 with 65 off 101. However, the right-handers’ effort was in vain.
Essex return to LV Insurance County CHampionship action on Thursday, May 20-23 when Warwickshire visit the Cloudfm County Ground (11am).
