Notts County v Southend United – Vanarama National League – Meadow Lane – Report
Notts County 4-1 Southend United
Troubled Southend United capped a disastrous week off the pitch with another catastrophic result on it.
Host’s Notts County came from behind to comfortably claim the points with a 4-1 triumph. Blues finishing the game with defender, Jason Demetriou taking over in goal following a worrying injury to Steve Arnold.
Following the announcement that the club was once again under a transfer embargo due to a ‘historic debt’ to HMRC, Blues briefly lifted the gloom for their near-900 away following when Sam Dalby fired home from close range after Rhys Murphy had created an opening.
But that was as good as it got for the Blues. Cal Roberts levelled the score after Kyle Wootton had caught Nathan Ralph napping before supplying the chance.
Wootton turned the game on its head shortly after the hour mark, and then took his tally for the season to eleven with a third to all but kill the contest.
Arnold limped out of the action thirteen minutes from time. Stand-in Demetriou saved from Connor Parsons but was unable to prevent Kyle Cameron from heading a fourth for Notts, leaving the Blues hovering above the relegation zone on goal difference.
Blues boss, Kevin Maher was again left frustrated with his sides defending: “The same sort of thing happened on Tuesday night as well, and sometimes we shoot ourselves in the foot.
“When you’ve worked so hard to give ourselves a platform in the game, you can feel the fans turning a little bit which we wanted to do. They were getting frustrated which can happen with a big crowd in a good stadium.
“We had to regroup again and go again second-half, but we ran out of steam in the end.”
Southend United now turn their attention to the Buildbase FA Trophy where they face Dorking Wanderers at Roots Hall Stadium on Saturday, December 18 (3pm).
