Colchester United v West Ham United U21 – Papa John’s Trophy – JobServe Community Stadium – Report
Colchester United 1-0 West Ham United U21
Colchester United finally recorded a competitive victory at the JobServe Community Stadium, edging out West Ham United’s youngsters in a competitive Papa John’s Trophy Southern Group ‘A’ tie.
The U’s had failed to win any of the opening three home Sky Bet League Two matches, while Gillingham recorded a single-goal success when visiting in the U’s first Group ‘A’ encounter.
But Colchester played an altogether more expansive style. Samson Tovide’s close-range header was smuggled away – Armando Dobra the provider. However, when Dobra was sent clear by debutant, Shay Cooper, the Ipswich loanee had just enough to prod beyond Hammers stopper, Krisztian Hegyi to give Colchester an early lead.
Hegyi saved brilliantly from Frank Nouble, then tipped aside a viciously deflected Junior Tchamadeu cross. Noah Chilvers fired over as the home side continued to create clearer opportunities.
West Ham’s threat had been minimal. Amadou Diallo contrived to miss a terrific opportunity from close-range after Harrison Ashby had centred in what was otherwise a frustrating half for the visitors.
Samson Tovide was wayward, while Dobra’s effort whistled the wrong side of an upright as Colchester continued to look the more likely after the restart. Meanwhile, substitute Ossanma Ashley soon found himself sidelined after coming off worse in a clash with Dobra – the Hammers man booked for his troubles while hobbling away from the action.
West Ham enjoyed plenty of the ball but continued to create precious little. Indeed, Man of the Match, Dobra again went close for the home side – Hegyi earning his corn with another smart save.
Tom Eastman’s late header was too high, while Sonny Perkins became the second Hammers man to miss a sitter – scooping over at the far post with the goal at his mercy.
