Essex Eagles 143/6 (20.0 overs)
Surrey 143/8 (20.0 overs)
Surrey won the toss and elected to bowl
ESSEX EAGLES somehow escaped with a share of the spoils after a dramatic final over at the Kia Oval.
With the scores level, Surrey required one run with two balls remaining. However, right-arm medium-fast man Matthew Quinn took centre stage for the visitors, firstly claiming the wicket of Ben Foakes – courtesy of Paul Walter on the rope. Then his last ball was snaffled by Adam Wheater, who swiftly returned the ball to the bowlers’ end to run out Matt Dunn.
Earlier, Essex had posted 143/6, with Ryan ten Doeschate top-scoring with 35 and Wheater weighing in with 32 – Scott Borthwick with 2/34 the pick of the Surrey attack.
The home side appeared to be well on course for a notable victory over the reigning champions. Foakes’ 44 and 30 from James Smith had carried Surrey to the cusp before Quinn’s late heroics.
Essex Eagles return to Vitality Blast action on Tuesday, September 2 when they face Hampshire at the Cloudfm County Ground, Chelmsford (2pm).
