Canvey Island v Concord Rangers – Park Lane – Saturday 3pm – Preview
Head of Recruitment Adam Drew can’t wait to see Concord Rangers back in action and coming up against one of his boyhood heroes on Saturday.
The Beach Boys make the short trip to local rivals Canvey Island, having had to reshuffle their pre-season plans due to restrictions put in place by the National League.
Nevertheless, with Canvey already underway, Concord will face a decent test against a side with minutes in the tank and themselves keen for a successful campaign under the guidance of former Southend United midfielder, Mark Bentley.
“I speak to Mark quite a bit,” Drew told Yellow Sport.
“I used to be a season ticket holder at Roots Hall. Mark was one of my heroes back in an era when Southend had a really successful side.
“He has recruited well at Canvey, I hope he has a decent season. But Saturday is about us. It’ll be good to get back out there because the break seems to have gone on forever what with the pandemic, then the new protocols implemented by the league.”
Drew continued: “The boys are ready to start playing and are itching to get back out on the pitch.
“Training has been good. We can already see we have a good bond coming together in the group, but that’s very much testament to the characters we have in the squad.
“One of the real positives has been the quality of our trialists. Saturday will be a great chance to look at them in a game situation. Although it will very much be a case of getting good minutes into all of the players, it’s always good to see the new boys and how they fit in.”
Following the easing of restrictions, Canvey will be admitting 200 spectators to their Park Lane ground: “It will be great to see the fans back,” Drew added.
“The game is all about the fans. Obviously, we’d love to see a few more in the stands and on the terraces, but this is a step in the right direction.”
