Arsenal v Newcastle United – Emirates Stadium – Premier League – Sunday 4:30pm
Arsenal v Newcastle United – Preview:
Arsenal return to Premier League action following their mid-season trip to Dubai, and manager, Mikel Arteta believed the trip, which included warm-weather training and team bonding exercises, had been extremely useful to the North Londoners.
“It was like a mini pre-season for us in Dubai,” Arteta explained.
“We had a lot of time to work on our principles, how we want to set up against different formations.
“It was great to spend some time getting to know each other, not just the players but the staff as well.”
The Spaniard was clearly pleased with what he had seen from his charges, adding: “The input, work ethic and commitment they’ve had through games has been really good.
“They have a really good mindset. They are highly motivated.”
The Gunners are now looking to reboot a stop-start campaign which currently sees them floundering in mid-table following four successive Premier League draws. They face a Newcastle side that has largely impressed this season under Steve Bruce and will be keen to avenge an opening day defeat inflicted upon them by Arsenal on the opening day of the season back in August.
Nevertheless, the Magpies have severe injury issues to contend with.
Andy Carroll, Jonjo Shelvey, Javier Manquillo, Emil Krafth, Paul Dummett and Jetro Willems are all out while Yoshinori Muto and Dwight Gayle are doubtful for the trip south.
