A heavy thunderstorm ensured an early conclusion to Essex Eagles’ Vitality Blast Battle of the Bridge with Kent Spitfires as well as ending the home sides’ recent revival which had seen them record remarkable victories at The Oval and Lord’s in the space of four days.

Kent skipper, Daniel Bell-Drummond hit a half-century, while Zak Crawley reached 43 – the pair having compiled an opening stand of 89 to hand the visitors the initiative. Jordan Cox and Darren Stevens also made useful contributions with the bat as Kent posted 167/9. Simon Harmer stemming the tide somewhat with 4/26 – Jimmy Neesham and Dan Lawrence each claiming two wickets apiece.

The Kent attack made swift inroads into the Essex top order, with Matthew Milnes taking 2/15, while Joe Denly and Fredrick Klaassen got in on the act, reducing the Eagles to 31/4 before the heavens opened and with lightning in close proximity. However, the match had reached the fifth over of the second innings, allowing the Duckworth/Lewis method to return a result in Kent’s favour.

Essex Eagles return to T20 Vitality Blast action on Tuesday, June 29 when Somerset visit the Cloudfm County Ground (7pm).
