Essex Eagles 139/6 (20.0 overs)
Hampshire 140/5 (19.5 overs)
Hampshire won the toss and elected to bowl
Hampshire won by five wickets

Frustrated by the weather against Middlesex, then pulling the proverbial rabbit out of the hat at the Oval had left holders Essex still looking for their first win of the 2020 Vitality Blast competition. And they’ll now have to wait a little longer after Hampshire snatched victory off the penultimate ball at Chelmsford.

Mason Crane showed the way for Hampshire, offering a watertight performance with the ball, taking 3/18 as the visitors restricted Essex to 139/6.

Ryan ten Doeschate top-scored, finishing unbeaten on 37 while Cameron Delport chipped in with 36 although that aside, Essex struggled to make positive headway with the bat.

George Munsey and Tom Alsop put together 51 for the first wicket as the Hants response began positively – Alsop the first to depart, caught by Tom Westley off skipper, Simon Harmer.

Munsey went soon after for 32. However, the Eagles attack applied the brakes with Aron Nijjar taking 2/25 as the hosts attempted to claw their way out of another hole.

However, on this occasion, Essex were not to prevail. Ian Holland hit Matthew Quinn across the rope off the second from last delivery to condemn Essex to their first Vitality Blast defeat in thirteen months.

Essex Eagles return to Vitality Blast action on Thursday, September 3 when they face Middlesex at Lord’s (6:15pm).
