Essex Eagles won by 28 runs

Watertight Essex Eagles soared into the quarter-final stage of the Vitality Blast after recording a 28-run victory over Sussex Sharks at Hove.

This was the Eagles’ third win on the bounce, confirming their qualification with a game to spare.

Wicketkeeper/batter, Adam Rossington celebrated the signing of a three-year deal with the club by hitting 95 off 50 balls during a 51-minute stint at the crease. The former Northamptonshire man’s knock included ten 4s and five 6s.

Tom Westley was also amongst the runs, scoring 54 off 30. However, with those around him falling cheaply, some question whether 197/8 would be enough against a Ravi Bopara-inspires Sharks side.

Indeed, having returned figures of two for 30, Bopara top-scored for the home side with 47 from 28. However, skipper Simon Harmer led by example, conceding just eighteen runs for three wickets during his four-over spell. Meanwhile, Daniel Sams took 3/45 as the visitors recorded their eighth South Group victory from thirteen matches.

Essex Eagles return to Vitality Blast South Group action on Saturday, July 2 when Glamorgan visit the Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford (6:30pm).
