Eight’s great for in-form Blues

Southend United v Bromley – Vanarama National League – Roots Hall Stadium – Report

Southend United 2-0 Bromley

Two goals in three second-half minutes from Matthew Dennis and Shaun Hobson extended in-form Southend United’s unbeaten Vanarama National League run to eight matches in front of a bumper Roots Hall Stadium crowd numbering 8,070.

This latest success for Kevin Maher’s men was particularly eyecatching. Facing a Bromley side in the thick of the promotion race and arriving in south-east Essex off the back of four victories, this was seen as a yardstick for the Blues who continue to progress at a rate of knots.

Following a goalless opening half, Southend sparked into life. Bromley stopper, Mark Cousins, tipped Sam Dalby’s effort onto an upright. However, Dennis was on hand to pick up the pieces and send the home fans wild with delight.

The Blues fans had barely retaken their seats when Hobson powerfully met Tom Clifford’s flag-kick, all but killing the contest.

As well as extending the unbeaten run to eight, this was Southend’s third win on the bounce, lifting them back into thirteenth place.

Southend United return to Vanarama National League action on Saturday, February 12 when they face Woking at the Kingfield Stadium (5:20pm).
