Eleven without defeat for Maher’s in-form Blues

Southend United v Dorking Wanderers – Vanarama National League – Roots Hall Stadium – Report

Southend United 2-0 Dorking Wanderers

Southend United extended their run to eleven league matches without defeat and moved up to fifth in the table following their 2-0 victory over Dorking Wanderers at Roots Hall.

Kevin Maher named an unchanged starting line-up for the third game in succession with the only change in the matchday squad being Dan Mooney’s return to replace Noor Husin on the bench.

Dorking Wanderers manager Marc White welcomed back captain Barry Fuller from injury whilst Archie Proctor was selected to make his first start since signing from Accrington Stanley. Luke Moore and Jack Jebb also came into the Wanderers side to replace Josh Taylor and James McShane.

With only nine minutes on the clock, Wes Fonguck was upended in the box by Fuller after being played through by Jack Bridge and referee Wayne Cartmel had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Despite Wanderers keeper Slavomir Huk getting his hand to the ball, Bridge converted the penalty – his second in three games, to put Blues 1-0 up.

Southend doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark when Shaun Hobson headed past Huq from ten yards out from Cav Miley’s corner to make it 2-0.

Dorking looked to rally somewhat thereafter and Jack Jebb went close when his twenty-yard effort hit the left post and in the closing moments of the first half, substitute Harry Ottaway’s deflected shot went just wide of the right-hand upright.

Southend had a good shout for another penalty turned down just after the break when Fonguck was again fouled by Fuller, only for referee Cartmel to this time wave play on.

Kevin Maher introduced Aaron Cosgrave and Harry Cardwell in place of Chris Wreh and Callum Powell in the sixty-seventh and seventy-second minute respectively and not long after, Blues were unfortunate not to add to the score when Gus Scott-Morriss’s twenty-yard effort was parried by Huq, who then recovered well to keep out Cardwell’s low shot with his legs.

Overall, an extremely comfortable win for the Blues and one that will stand them in good stead for the long trip to bottom of the table Gateshead next Saturday.
