Essex and Middlesex concluded their preparations ahead of the new LV=Insurance County Championship season, with a useful two-day workout at the Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford. 

Paul Walter and Michael Pepper hit half-centuries, while Adam Rossington scored 49 during an 87-minute stint at the crease as the Essex batters gleaned valuable time in the middle on the opening day.

Walter hit 65* off 68 balls during a weather-affected day that had begun in bright and breezy conditions. Pepper’s 50* came off 46 balls. Both batters retired, allowing others an opportunity.

Essex declared on 274 for six. The wickets were distributed between five of the six Middlesex bowlers. Ryan Higgins returning figures of 10-3-34-2. Meanwhile, South African, Dean Elgar was unbeaten on 23 having earlier been dismissed by Higgins for 4.

Middlesex skipper, Leus du Plooy stood out on day two, retiring on 54 off 45, while Higgins and Jack Davies each contributed 39 to the visitors 256 for six. 

Essex deployed eight bowlers, with Simon Harmer claiming two for 51.

Essex begin their LV= Insurance County Championship Division One campaign on Friday, April 5-9 when they face Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge (11am).

Middlesex begin their LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two campaign on Friday, April 5-9 when they face Glamorgan at Lord’s (11am).
