Essex Blast washout

Essex v Somerset – Vitality Blast South Group – Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford – Report

Essex’s all-important Vitality Blast clash with Somerset at the Cloud County Ground was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

The Chelmsford groundstaff had grappled with the wet weather conditions throughout the day, and with no sign of a let-up, the game was called off just before 7:40pm.

While there was no play in the County Town, Essex’s chief rivals for qualification, Gloucestershire, found themselves on the wrong end of the result in a weather-affected match against Kent at the Cheltenham College Ground.

Daniel Bell-Drummond hit 76 off 52 balls, helping Kent to a modest 150. However, with the wet conditions taking hold, the contest was settled by the Duckworth/Lewis Method after Gloucestershire had scored 29 for two from five overs. Kent won by eight runs.

As a result, Essex remains in fourth place in the South Group, while holders Somerset occupies third.
