Essex bowlers tested as Bell-Drummond takes centre stage

Essex v Kent – Two-day friendly match – Cloudfm County Ground, Chelmsford – Day One – Summary

Kent: 270/5 (85.0 overs)
Essex: (Yet to bat)
Toss: Uncontested – Kent batting first

Following a couple of useful two-day warm-up matches with Lancashire at the Cloudfm County Ground, Essex welcomed old adversaries, Kent to Chelmsford in a similar format as the club concluded their pre-season activities ahead of next week’s LV Insurance County Championship opener with Worcestershire.

It proved to be a tough examination for the Essex bowlers. Kent skipper, Daniel Bell-Drummond retired out having scored 101 off 164 balls – a stylish knock that included eighteen 4s and one 6. Jack Leaning also impressing for the visitors similarly departing the fray – his 187 minutes in the middle gleaning a steady 57.

Jordan Cox and Zak Crawley had fallen cheaply before lunch – both returned – Cox 36* and Crawley 30* – as Kent made the most of their batting practice.

Essex used ten bowlers during the day. Ben Allison impressed, ending Cox’s off-stump cartwheeling – finishing the day with 1/15 from twelve overs, while Shane Snater followed up some sterling work last time out, trapping Cawley lbw for 2. Matt Quinn also got in on the act, equivalently capturing Ollie Robinson who had scored 13.

Essex’s day was tempered by Aaron Beard sustaining what appeared to be a groin injury – the player prostrate on the greenery, clearly in discomfort after pulling up short on the final ball of his fourth over.
