Essex concluded their Adu Dhabi pre-season warm-up with some valuable red-ball match practise against Somerset at the Tolerance Oval.

Having already faced off in twenty and forty-five over contests, the sides meet over two days in a ninety-over match with Essex initially taking the ball and using nine bowlers. Jack Plom, Shane Snater and Aaron Beard each took two wickets, while Sam Cook and Ben Allison also got in on the act.

Somerset scored 256/8 during their day at the crease. Abell finished unbeaten on 66, while Lammonby hit 56 and Smeed 36 – The latter pair victims of Plom during the third session of the day.

Essex reached 254/6 on day two, with Alastair Cook making 64, while Adam Wheater chipped in with 59. Rymell (23*) and Das (13*) finished unbeaten, while van der Merwe impressed for Somerset, taking 2/34 from his 15 overs.

Essex return to action next Wednesday, March 23 when they stage an in-house friendly match at The Cloudfm County Ground, Chelmsford (10:30am).
