Durham v Essex – LV Insurance County Championship – Emirates Riverside – Summary
Essex 182 and 301
Durham 99 and 189
Durham won the toss and elected to bowl
Essex won by 185 runs
Essex recorded their third LV Insurance County Championship victory of the campaign, seeing off Durham at the Emirates Riverside inside three days.
Spectators returning to the North-East arena were left largely frustrated as Michael Pepper’s 92 helped Essex recover from 53/5 to reach 182. Chris Rushworth (4/32) and Scott Borthwick (4/45) the pick of the Durham attack.
Sam Cook took centre stage as chief tormentor, the right-arm fast-medium taking 4/38, while Jamie Porter and Peter Siddle each claimed three apiece as the hosts were dismissed for 99. Cameron Bancroft’s 20 the top-offering amongst some slim pickings from the Durham batting order.
Adam Wheater and Ryan ten Doeschate put together 125 for the sixth wicket after the visitors had been reduced to 53/5. Ben Raine took 5/64, while Brydon Carse (3/69) carried the fight, but Simon Harmer contributed a further 47* as Essex established a sizable lead.
And that proved amply sufficient as Jamie Porter (4/31) and Peter Siddle (3/47) carried the visitors’ to a comfortable success – Durham dismissed for 189 (Alex Lees 48), the margin of victory 185-runs. Essex return to LV Insurance County Championship action on Thursday, June 3-6 when Nottinghamshire visit the Cloudfm County Ground (11am)
