Ben Allison, Aron Nijjar and Ryan ten Doeschate took three wickets apiece as Essex recorded a 25-run victory over Cambridgeshire in a rain-affected National Counties Challenge Match at the Cloudfm County Ground.

Allison claimed 3/27, Nijjar 3/25 and ten Doeschate 3/22 to secure a 25-run success after the stormy weather had offered Cambridgeshire a revised target of 158 from 32 overs.

Wicketkeeper/batsman Lee Thomason had top-scored for the visitors with 35, while skipper Callum Guest hit 33 – both swiftly falling to ten Doeschate having put together a 67-run partnership.

Earlier, Alastair Cook had hit 46, while Adam Wheater contributed 37 either side of the lightning storm. Harrison Craig impressed with the ball for Cambridgeshire, taking 5/14 during his seven overs.

Essex now turns their attention to the Royal London Cup, taking on Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl on Thursday, July 22 (11am).
