Durham trail Essex by 108 runs with seven second-innings wickets standing

Paul Walter and Ben Allison carried the fight as champions Essex made a fist of things on day three of their LV Insurance County Championship clash with Durham at Chelmsford.

Resuming on 208/6, Essex lost Simon Harmer with only the third ball of the day. However, Walter batted majestically to reach 77 off 134 deliveries, while Allison’s 196 minutes in the middle had gleaned 52 as the host continued their fightback.

Sam Cook also provided a useful knock – his 37 from 76 helping Essex to 330 – a lead of 167 – Essex’s last three wickets costing the Durham attack 122 – Brydon Carse the pick of their bowlers with 5/82.

And the see-saw nature of the contest continued as Will Young was knocked over by Sam Cook and Alex Lees trapped lbw by Porter to leave Durham 0/2 in the middle of the third over. But David Bedingham steadied the ship, finishing the day unbeaten on 31 – the visitors’ needing a further 108 runs for victory.

Essex had been rolled over for just 96 in their first innings – Durham taking charge with a century from the skipper, Borthwick and a ninth-wicket stand of 94 between Stuart Poynter and Matthew Salisbury. Play resumes on Sunday at 11am.
