Essex v Nottinghamshire – LV Insurance County Championship – Cloudfm County Ground – Day One – Summary
Nottinghamshire 248/6 (96.0 over)
Essex (Yet to bat)
Nottinghamshire won the toss and elected to bat
Half-centuries from Lyndon James, skipper Steven Mullaney and Joe Clarke gave Nottinghamshire the edge on day one as group A’s top two went head-to-head at the Cloudfm County Ground.
Separated by five points at the start of play and a game labelled ‘must-win’ by both parties, but it was Essex who enjoyed the better of the first session, reducing Notts to 71/3 at lunch, with Clarke also back in the pavilion with a throbbing hand, retired not out, after a pacy delivery from Sam Cook nipped up.
James would reach 54 off 163 balls and Mullaney 55 from 178 – the pair falling to Peter Siddle and Shane Snater respectively. Alastair Cook displayed safe hands at first slip – the pair Essex’s most successful with the ball on an action-packed opening day.
Clarke had left the fray in the sixteenth over on 11. He returned to trouble the hosts further, finishing the day unbeaten on 57 – Siddle had 3/76, while Snater continued to emerge as a valuable member of this Essex group with 2/35.
Sam Cook could be kept out of the spotlight. The right-arm fast-medium removed Tom Moore with a corking delivery which clipped the top of his off-stump. Play resumes on Friday at 11am.
