Sam Cook took his haul to 4/77 but Essex found themselves frustrated by a resistant Worcestershire middle order on day three of their LV Insurance County Championship encounter at Chelmsford.

Resuming their overnight total of 43/3, the visitors soon lost Brett D’Oliveira.- trapped lbw to become Cook’s fourth victim. However, Worcestershire steadied the ship, largely due to unbeaten centuries from Jake Libby and Ed Barnard.

Libby had reached 141 from 369 balls, while Barnard’s 116* helped the partnership flourish to 205 by the close.

Riki Wessels passed fifty for the visitors before falling lbw to Jamie Porter, while the other half of the traditional Essex ‘double act’ Simon Harmer, similarly dismissed Ben Fox on an otherwise tough day for the home side.

Initially, Tom Westley’s 213 had placed Essex in a strong position – Adam Wheater also amongst the runs with 87. Play resume on Sunday at 11am.
