Alastair Cook’s impressive performance with the bat was followed up by some livewire bowling from Jamie Porter, Sam Cook and Simon Harmer helping Essex take a stranglehold on day two of their LV=Insurance County Championship Division Two encounter with Surrey at the Kia Oval.
Having reached the sixty-ninth first-class century of his career, former England captain, Cook went on to reach 165 during a 450-minuter stint at the crease.
Cook’s knock was contrived from 330 balls and included twenty boundaries. Meanwhile, Dan Lawrence contributed 78 off 130 and Tom Westley 47 as Essex racked up the runs – Rikki Clarke, Jordan Clark, Daniel Moriarty and Reece Topley each snaffling two wickets apiece for the hosts.
The Essex attack soon got to work, reducing Surrey to 107/7 at the close. Porter took 2/17, while Cook (2/22) and Harmer (2/32) ensured the visitors a strong position.
Surrey skipper, Hashim Amla offered some resistance and was unbeaten on 58 at the close. Play resumes on Tuesday at 10:30am.
