Essex Eagles secured their Royal London One Day Cup progress following this extraordinary contest with Lancashire at Old Trafford.

Alastair Cook’s 110 off 128 balls kept the visitors in the contest. However, the main talking point was a dramatic final over which Simon Harmer hit three successive sixes off Steven Croft, helping Essex achieve an unlikely tie.

Essex went into that particular finale requiring 22 and with no run coming off Croft’s first delivery to Jack Plom, Lancashire appeared to be home and hosed.

But Harmer’s heroics left Essex needing three off the final ball – the Pretoria-born allrounder scampering back for two and securing second place in Group ‘A’ setting up a tie with Yorkshire at Chelmsford on Saturday.

Earlier, Croft had hit 93 and George Lavelle 52 as Lancashire posted 250/6. Ryan ten Doeschate taking 2/33 and Aron Nijjar 2/59.

Essex Eagles now face Yorkshire at the Cloudfm County Ground, Chelmsford on Saturday, August 14 at the play-off stage of the Royal London One Day Cup (11am).
