Essex Over 70’s v Cheshire Over 70’s – 70+ Championship final – Cirencester Cricket Club
Essex 134 (38.4 overs)
Cheshire 113/8 (40.0 overs)
Essex won by 21 runs
ESSEX’S OVER 70’s side followed in the over 50’s footsteps, winning the EC 70+ Championship after a low scoring final staged at Cirencester Cricket Club against a strong Cheshire side.
Simon Rippingale scored 36 while Bob Newman chipped in with 35 as Essex struggled for runs on a difficult track after being invited to bat. Cheshire’s Billy Smith took 4/28 and David Cain 3/27 as the bowlers appeared to have taken a grip of the contest for the North-West side.
Indeed, Essex found themselves dismissed for the first time in this seasons competition having scored a modest 134.
However, the Cheshire order found it equally as tough in the middle. Kevan Anderson led the way for the attack with 2/11, Kevan Pratt providing the perfect foil, taking 2/25 and leaning the contest the way of Essex.
And so it proved. Cheshire completed their set just shy of their target. Chris Lees and David Cain both hit 19 but it was all to no avail as Essex – unbeaten throughout the competition – recorded a 21-run success.
