Essex’s second-string suffered a seven-wicket defeat to Hampshire’s 2nd XI on their return to Second XI Championship action at Billericay’s Blunts Wall Road ground.
Aaron Beard’s half-century was the highlight of the Essex first innings. The 23-year-old reached fifty off 81 balls during a 126-minute stint at the crease. Kishen Velani hit 47 – MG Booth taking 3/24 for the visitors.
Fletcha Middleton’s 76 contributed to Hampshire establishing a useful lead – Toby Albert (47) and Charlie Mumford (40) also amongst the runs – Beard impressing with the ball, taking 4/77 while Eshun Kalley claimed 3/34.
Nick Browne and Michael Pepper both passed fifty, while Felix Organ’s 6/82 kept the contest in the balance. And so it proved as Hampshire, driven by a stylish unbeaten 105 off 157 deliveries from Tom Scriven, eased to victory. Albert contributed 63 – Ben Waring (2/62) for the beaten home side.
