Josh van Heerden held his nerve to secure a dramatic last-ball victory for Essex’s second XI over their Surrey counterparts on a scorching afternoon at Garon Park.

Needing nine off the final over, van Heerden came up with the goods, including two off the final delivery, helping Essex to a four-wicket triumph. 

Earlier, Paul Walter, with 3/20, and Shane Snater (2/12) impressed with the ball for the home side as Surrey – after a whirlwind start which bore 22 off the opening two overs – were dismissed in eighteen overs for 150. 

A third-wicket stand of 78 between Ryan Patel and Justin Broad provided the foundation of the visitors total. Essex deployed seven bowlers – Eshun Kalley and van Heerden also among the wickets for the home side.

Nick Browne top-scored for the home side, hitting 37 during a 38-minute-spell in the middle. Snater chipped in with 35 off 32 and Walter 34 from 28 – van Heerden’s heroics leaving him unbeaten on 30 – Jade Dernbach with 2/22 and Gus Atkinson 2/27 for the experienced Surrey side.
