Essex Seniors Cricket enjoy another successful summer

It proved to be another highly eventful summer for Essex’s rapidly expanding Senior Cricket section, who continued their rich vein of form from recent years with further success.

Essex Seniors Cricket County Representative and General Secretary, Terry Sims, has again worked tirelessly both in a playing capacity as well as in his vitally important administrative role with the club.

“We entered six teams in National Championship Competitions in 2022,” Terry explained.

“Four in the Over 60s and two in the Over 70s. Plus a 60+ 5th X1 was launched during the season to provide cricket for our ever-increasing membership, arranging a series of friendly games.

“Our 60+ 1st X1, our flagship team, was the most successful, reaching the National Final to play Sussex.

“Unfortunately, a downpour midway through the Sussex innings – batting first – saw the game abandoned. The re-run of this match has been postponed to the start of season 2023, with the agreement of both counties who had difficulties with availabilities at short notice, plus issues finding a venue, what with clubs putting their squares to bed for the Autumn.”

“In reaching the final, the stand-out performer was Kevin Grant with the bat – 12 innings, 956 runs at an average of 106, including 6 centuries.

“Kevin’s achievement was recognised at the recent Essex CCC EOS Dinner, where he received the Essex Seniors Player of the Year award.”

Terry continued: “The 60+ 2nd X1 and 3rd X1 both reached the quarter-final stages, but both were defeated in very close games that went down to the wire.

“The 60+ 4th X1 finished a respectable second in their league – a league-only competition with no knockout stages.”

Terry confirmed that there are areas of the Senior Section that needs attention: “The 70+ teams both had disappointing seasons that they will be keen to forget. Fresh blood is urgently needed with a few ‘youngsters’ hopefully stepping up from the 60s squad in a bid to improve ahead of the 2023 season.”

Several players have been selected for international duty in the near future: “I must mention the three 60+ Essex players who have been selected to represent England 60+ on a tour in Barbados in the New Year,” he added.

“On the plane and escaping the English winter chills will be Kevin Grant, Neil Brathwaite, and Joseph Pierre. We wish them well.”
