Essex 193 for six (20.0 overs)

Somerset 197 for six (19.1 overs)

Somerset won the toss and elected to bowl

Somerset won by four wickets

Essex’s troubled start to their Vitality Blast campaign continued as they were beaten by holders Somerset at The Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton.

Off the back of a defeat at Gloucestershire twenty-four hours earlier, Essex started brightly with openers Adam Rossington and Dean Elgar putting on 67 for the first wicket. Elgar went on to score 77 off 51 balls. His innings included eight 4s and two 6s.

Rossington contributed 32, while Jordan Cox scored 30, helping Essex to 193 for six. Skipper Lewis Gregory was the pick of the Somerset bowlers, returning figures of 4-0-42-3.

The contest was nip and tuck, going to the final over. However, Tom Abell and Gregory’s thirty-ball fifth wicket stand of 60 did the bulk of the damage. Abell’s 55 came off 36 balls, while Gregory’s 44 from 20 included four 6s. Aaron Beard and Paul Walter took two wickets apiece, but Essex were again left licking their wounds.

Speaking to Andrew Stockhausen from the ECB Reporters Network, Essex seamer Beard said: “We played a lot better than against Gloucestershire, but still didn’t score enough runs.

“Taunton is one of the highest-scoring grounds in world T20 cricket and we knew we needed to get at least 200. In the end, we were about 20 short, which was disappointing.

“We made things happen in the field and I thought we made a good game of it for a while. But it only takes one or two overs to go against you to change a game completely these days, and that’s what happened. Lewis Gregory and Tom Abell played well at the death and just took the game away from us.”

Essex returns to Vitality Blast action on Sunday, June 2 when they face Middlesex at the Cloud County Ground (4pm).
