Essex won the toss and elected to bowl

Essex won by one wicket

Essex squeezed to their first LV=Insurance County Championship Division One victory of the season following a dramatic finish at Taunton.

The visitors appeared to be well on their way to a comfortable victory after skittling Somerset for just 109. Simon Harmer took 3/14 after returning from Test Match duty with South Africa, while Sam Cook claimed 3/17 and Mark Steketee 3/46 as the hosts’ batting order was decimated devastatingly.

Craig Overton ensured Essex didn’t have it all their own way. Despite establishing a 71-run first-innings advantage, the Barnstable-born quick took 7/57. Alastair Cook passed 25,000 first-class runs, top-scoring with 59.

Having already dispatched the hosts cheaply, the Essex attack again got to work with Shane Snater producing a terrific performance, taking 6/36 as Somerset were dismissed for 154. Cook and Steketee added a brace of wickets apiece, taking their match figures to 5/39 and 5/100 respectively. Matthew Renshaw (45) and Steve Davies (51) the only batters to offer any resistance from a Somerset perspective.

Essex appeared to be on Easy Street, requiring just 84 for victory. Overton had other ideas, taking 6/30, ably supported by former Essex man, Peter Siddle (3/25).

With Essex floundering on 60/8, Adam Rossington held his nerve, finishing unbeaten on 29 as Essex got home by the narrowest of margins.

Essex return to LV=Insurance County Championship Division One action on Thursday, April 21-24 when they take on Warwickshire at Edgbaston (11am).
