Warwickshire v Essex – LV= Insurance County Championship Division One – Edgbaston -Day One – Report

Essex 126 (41.3 overs)

Warwickshire 17/2 (7.0 overs)

Warwickshire won the toss and elected to bowl

Warwickshire trail by 109 runs with eight first innings wickets standing

Despite a late start due to a saturated surface, no less than twelve wickets tumbled on the first day of Essex’s LV= Insurance County Championship Division One encounter with Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

Indeed, groundstaff worked incredibly hard to ensure play got underway at two o’clock. Warwickshire took the ball and the initiative with Olly Hannon-Dalby and Chris Rushworth each claiming four wickets as Essex were skittled inside forty-two overs for just 126.

Hannon-Dalby returned figures of four for 21, while chipped in with Rushworth’s 4/28. Hasan Ali got in on the act with a brace. Skipper, Tom Westley proved to be the only Essex batter to offer stubborn resistance, scoring 47 off 94 balls during a dogged 137-minutes at the crease.

But having seemingly taken control, Warwickshire lost two wickets before the close. Rob Yates was trapped lbw by Jamie Porter off the very first ball of the home sides innings, while Alex Davies followed, caught by Dan Lawrence to hand Porter his second in what had been a fascinating day of cricket. Play resumes on Friday at 11am.
