Hampshire v Essex – Metro Bank One-Day Cup – The Ageas Bowl, Southampton – Report

Essex 236/9 (45.0 overs)

Hampshire 237/6 (43.4 overs)

Essex won the toss and elected to bat

Hampshire won by four wickets

Essex’s tough start to their Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign continued as they were beaten by Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.

In a match reduced to forty-five overs-per-side due to the wet weather conditions, the visitors posted 236 for nine. Beau Webster top-scored with an impressive 73 off 99 balls, while Simon Harmer marked his return to the side by contributing 68 from 75. Keith Barker returned bowling figures of three for 25 from nine overs, while Nick Gubbins (5- 1-24-2) and Ian Holland (9-0-42-2) were also amongst the wickets.

Hampshire chased down their target with eight balls to spare. Gubbins reached 63 before falling to Tom Westley, while wicketkeeper/batter Ben Brown scored 59 and Aneurin Donald 47.

Westley finished with two for 22 and Jamie Porter, 2/29. Speaking to Alex Smith from the ECB Reporters Network, Essex all-rounder, Webster, said: “It was tricky early. Keith Barker was hitting a nice length and got a couple of early poles there. It was hard to put some pressure back on him when he is hitting that nice length with a bit in the wicket.

“We did well to get 230 but they batted a little better than us.

“Simon came out and from ball one struck the ball really nicely. We had a nice partnership to get us into a decent position on a tricky wicket.

“We have experience in myself, Westley and Harmer in the middle order but we still have a very young side. I’m sure they will come good but it is a tricky competition with some good bowlers. Hopefully, they can get going and get their competitions going.

“If there are a few left-handers or some turn then I prefer to bowl off spin. It was turning pretty big out there so I was always going to bowl offies, like at Chelmsford.

“If there is a little bit in the wicket I will always bowl seam up when I can get a little nibble but other than that it’ll be off-spin.”
