Essex 2nd XI v Yorkshire 2nd XI – Second XI Championship – Billericay Cricket Club – Summary
Yorkshire 2nd XI: 348 and 180
Essex 2nd XI: 219/7d and 176
Yorkshire 2nd XI won the toss and elected to bat
Yorkshire won by 133 runs
The Essex second string found themselves on the wrong end of the result as Yorkshire ran out winners in a Second XI Championship encounter staged at Billericay Cricket Club.
Matthew Waite produced a memorable innings hitting 170 off 187 balls during 269-minutes in the middle – the all-rounders’ remarkable knock including 22 boundaries and two 6s.
Right-hander, James Wharton was also amongst the runs, scoring 88 as the visitors reached 348 – Ben Allison (3/42) and Aaron Beard (3/101) amongst the wickets for the hosts.
With bad light and rain affecting the contest, Aron Nijjar’s 72 off 105 balls was the highlight of the hosts’ first innings. Josh Rymell contributed 40 before an Essex declaration came on 219/7 – Matthew Fisher with 3/43.
An eventful final day saw Yorkshire add a further 180 – Waite following his first innings score with 68 off 70 balls before becoming one of Nijjar’s 6/37. However, the slow left-arm orthodox man’s contribution proved insufficient as 5/28 from Dom Leech and 3/33 from Jack Shutt ensured a comfortable 133-run triumph for the visitors Michael Pepper’s 85 off 72 deliveries coming in vain for Essex.
