A small, enthusiastic crowd assembled at the Peter Butler Oval, Garon Park to Essex open their Second XI T20 South Group campaign against their Middlesex counterparts.

The audience was treated to some big-hitting from Josh de Caires and most notably, Joe Cracknell. Caires scored 61 off 38 balls, including eight 4s and two 6s. Meanwhile, skipper Cracknell’s 71 came from 37 during an all-action 53-minute stint at the crease. Jamal Richards was the pick of the six-man Essex attack, returning figures of 4-0-36-3. Middlesex posted a competitive 216 for seven.

And that proved amply sufficient as the Middlesex attack set about their task, reducing Essex to 40 for four. Grant Roelofsen carried the fight with 43 off 30. However, two-wicket hauls from Noah Cornwell, Ishaan Kaushal and de Caires went some way towards earning the visitors a comfortable victory with some to spare.
