Extra police powers authorised after disturbances in Leigh-on-Sea

Additional stop and search powers have been granted to officers in Leigh-on-Sea following a number of reported incidents of disorder in Leigh-on-Sea.

Between 3pm and 5pm today, police received a number of reports of groups of people fighting and some reports of weapons involved.

Due to this, additional stop and search powers under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 has been authorised.

This is essentially an extension of the stop and search powers officers already have, but differs because it means they do not need to have reasonable grounds to carry out a stop and search.

It will be in place from 6.50pm today (Wednesday May 25) until 4.50am tomorrow (Thursday May 26).

Inspector Andrew Jopson said: “We won’t tolerate people committing crime and carrying out act of violence and these extended powers are just one of the tools we have available to protect the public.

“If you are in the area overnight you will see an increased police presence but please do not be alarmed.

“I want to thank the public in advance for their understanding and co-operation.”
