Colchester United v Sutton United – Sky Bet League Two – JobServe Community Stadium – Report

Colchester United 1-3 Sutton United

Colchester United supporters called for the resignation of Chairman, Robbie Cowling as the ten-man U’s slumped to another disappointing Sky Bet League Two defeat at the JobServe Community Stadium.

It’s difficult to see exactly where Hayden Mullins and his side go from here. Nevertheless, they made a cracking start. Freddie Sears was fed by Charlie Daniels – turned and fired low into the bottom corner – Sutton goalkeeper, Dean Bouzanis’ first touch collecting the ball from the back of the net inside the opening two minutes.

David Ajiboye forced Shamal George into a smart save as Sutton – stunned by the early goal – looked for an immediate response. But Colchester hadn’t learned their lesson. Ajiboye nipped in front of Daniels to net from close range – Rob Milsom fashioning the opening from the left.

George fingertips over from Isaac Olaofe. But from the resulting corner, George fumbled, Samson Tovide handled on the line and was sent off – Rob Milsom sending the beleaguered U’s keeper the wrong way from the resulting spot-kick.

The mood around the stadium darkened as agitated U’s fans forcefully called for the Cowling’s departure. Omar Bugiel almost worsened the situation – his fizzing effort a whisker away from killing the contest before the break.

Coby Rowe’s timely interception denied Sears a sight of goal shortly after the restart. And within seconds, Sutton extended their advantage – George making a hash of Ben Goodliffe’s goalbound header – the protests evermore vigorous from those behind the goal.

Noah Chilvers – so often Colchester’s brightest prospect – fired wide from distance, while Sears was frustrated by an assistants’ flag. But in truth, the U’s race was already run. Sutton, with a man-advantage, were able to dominate possession and the tempo of the contest – condemning the home side to their sixth defeat of the season in the process.
