Garon Park make a steady start to their EWFL campaign

Garon Park made a satisfactory start to their Essex Walking Football over 50s campaign at Melbourne Park, Chelmsford.

The Southend-based side was reliant on former Clapton goalkeeper, Michael Orme to make some important saves and help secure a goalless draw in their first game with a strong Concord Rangers Yellow outfit.

Garon followed this with an unfortunate single-goal defeat against reigning champions, Cornard. Andy Chambers hit an upright, while Mark Elnaugh was blue-carded and sent off for three minutes following three offences.

Despite seemingly on course to ride out the game comfortably, a late goal earned Cornard the victory and maximum points.

But it all came together in their final match of the weekly series. Elnaugh made up for his earlier misdemeanour by firing Garon Park into an early lead with a strike too hot for the Concord Rangers Blue keeper to handle.

The Beach Boys side levelled the score. However, a late penalty was fiercely dispatched by Andy Chambers to secure a 2-1 success and a credible opening round.
