There were plenty of goals but a mixed bag of results for Garon Park’s Walking footballers as two teams from the Southend hub competed with their counterparts from Wakering and Bexley in a warm-up event ahead of the new season.
Mark Elnaugh’s late equaliser cancelled out Paul Holloway’s opener for Bexley as Garon’s started with a share of the spoils. Meanwhile, a strong Wakering outfit saw off Garon’s second string by four unanswered goals.
Elnaugh was again on target as Garon made a sharp start in their clash with Wakering. However, the villagers struck back forcefully to win the game by four goals to one.
The high-scoring nature of the mini-tournament continued as Bexley beat Garon’s seconds 4-2. Then the host’s first and second teams conjured up five goals between them – The firsts winning by the odd goal in five, largely thanks to a string of fine saves from goalkeeper, Michael Orme.
The final match of the round saw Bexley twice come from behind to edge out Wakering 3-2. Holloway added to his tally with a well-taken brace.
