Garon Park triumphant in Walking Football Christmas tournament

A strong Garon Park team won their inaugural Christmas tournament, beating Eastwood Falcons in a hard-fought final

Two teams apiece from Garon Park and Wakering, along with sides from Leyton Orient, Eastwood Falcons, Billericay Town and Grays Athletic competed in the well-attended competition.

Eastwood Falcons reached the Garon Park tournament final

Garon Park’s ‘A’ team produced a clean sweep in the group stages, seeing off Grays Athletic (4-0), Leyton Orient (3-0) and Wakering ‘B’ (3-1), then edged out Wakering ‘A’ in a close semi-final tie.

Garon’s were 3-1 winners over the Falcons in the final. Paul Holloway scored ten goals during the day, while Paul Wells Steve Jennings Andy Chambers and Mark Elnaugh were also on target.

On their route to the final, Rob Kenton set the ball rolling, netting the Falcons first in a 2-0 win over Garon Park ‘B’. A dramatic ‘Roy of the Rovers’ style comeback in the semi saw them recover a two-goal deficit to edge out Wakering ‘B’ 3-2 – A Gareth Ackery brace and one from Colin Foley completing the comeback. Dean Clarke (2) and Gareth Ackery found the net during the tournaments infancy.

Wakering fielded two mixed aged teams, who played out a tense goalless draw in the third/fourth placed play-off match.

Wakering ‘A’

Melvin, Paul Tregent, Peter Henry and Butterfield provided the ‘A’ sides’ tournament goals. Dave Willis (3), Gary Jackson (2) and Kevin Bantin were on target for the ‘B’s’.

Wakering ‘B’

Billericay Town beat Grays Athletic in the fourth-fifth play-off, while Leyton Orient won a penalty shootout against Garon Park ‘B’ in the wooden spoon match.
