Gateway 97.8 celebrates success at national Community Radio Awards

Basildon radio station, Gateway 97.8, has won three awards at the annual national Community Radio Awards.

The station, which celebrated its 10th birthday this year, is one of 300 community radio stations across the UK.

Gateway 97.8 editor, Johnny Jenkins, won the Young Person of the Year award.

The 12-hour 2019 election special, hosted by David Webster and Johnny Jenkins, also won in its category.

Basildon Question Time, hosted by Johnny Jenkins, won the gold award for Speech Journalism.

And Tyler Pittaway took bronze in the Best Entertainment cattegory.

Johnny Jenkins, said: “I’m delighted that our local radio station has won three gold awards at the national Community Radio Awards.

“It’s a testament to the hard work of the team, who have been working tirelessly to remain on air in this difficult year.

“Personally, I’m chuffed to win the Young Person of the Year. Thank you to everybody who has helped me over the past five years at Gateway 97.8.”
