Arsenal’s Walking Footballers were welcome guests at Garon Park’s latest mini-tournament staged at the Southend-based clubs’ home ground over the weekend.
The Gunners, represented by their over 60s team, faced two teams from Garon’s along with a strong Eastwood Falcons side in what proved to be a competitive event.
Arsenal beat Garon Park ‘B’ by four unanswered goals, then drew 2-2 with the hosts’ ‘A’ side – the visitors’ grabbing a late equaliser. Eastwood Falcons sprung a surprise by beating the North Londoners by a goal to nil.
Paul Holloway top-scored for Garon Park, finding the net on four occasions. As well as their stalemate with the Gunners, Garon’s played out a goalless draw with Eastwood before beating their ‘B’ team by three goals to nil. Highlighting the unpredictability of the day, Garon ‘B’ edged out Eastwood by the odd goal in three.
Former New Zealand full international, Peter Henry was amongst the Arsenal squad, while Gunners and England over 65s goalkeeper, Alan Kumrou told Yellow Sport: “We enjoyed playing against teams perhaps a little younger than us.
“All the games were played competitively and in a good spirit. It was an enjoyable run-out.”
