Uncontested toss – Essex batting first

A small crowd assembled at the Cloud County Ground to oversee Essex and Middlesex’s final preparations ahead of Friday’s opening round of LV= Insurance County Championship fixtures.

With something for everyone, as is usually the case in these situation matches, Essex were handed an opportunity to tune their batting, with Paul Walter and Michael Pepper hitting half-centuries, while Adam Rossington scored 49 during an 87-minute stint at the crease.

Walter hit 65* off 68 balls during a weather-affected day that had begun in bright and breezy conditions. Pepper’s 50* came off 46 balls. Both batters retired, allowing others an opportunity.
