West Ham United 1-2 Newcastle United

A breathless opening forty-five minutes saw Allan Saint-Maximin centred for Callum Wilson to head beyond Lukasz Fabianski from close range as the Geordies got off to a flyer.

The Hammers’ evening swiftly deteriorated. VAR took a look after Joelinton had raced clear and rounded Fabianski. The verdict was on-side. The home side was already facing a mountain to climb. Fabian Schär, the archutect.

Newcastle stopper Nick Pope pushed aside Lucas Paqueta’s dead-ball attempt, while Michail Antonio’s route to goal was blocked by a clutch of black and white shirts as the home side desperately looked for a way back into the contest. And they were handed a lifeline five minutes before the break. Kurt Zouma ghosted in behind Pope to head home Bowen’s flag-kick, sending the home crowd into raptures in the process.
