Reading v West Ham United – Friendly Match – Select Car Leasing Stadium – Report
Reading 0-3 West Ham United
West Ham United went through the gears to record a comfortable three-goal pre-season victory over a busy Reading outfit at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.
West Ham controlled from the start. Both Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen forced early saves from Reading stopper, Rafael, while Femi Azeez was off target as the sides exchanged early opportunities during a bright and breezy start.
West Ham was asking sterner questions. Bowen was thwarted by Rafael, while Connor Coventry’s effort was hooked off the line by Andy Yiadom as the Republic of Ireland youth international looked to profit from the rebound.
But a goal was coming and it arrived seven minutes before the interval. Issa Diop met Bowne’s flag-kick – the ball subsequently beating Rafael after deflecting wickedly of Jeriel Dorsett.
Substitute Said Benrahma saw a deflected effort of his own ruled out immediately after the restart. But a second goal wasn’t long in coming. Ben Johnson squared, handing Coventry the simplest of opportunities from close range.
Despite the usual deluge of substitutions the contest continued to be played at a decent pace. But it was the East Londoners who continued to look more likely. Ben Johnson obliged – cooly beating incoming Royals keeper Luke Southwood, after skipping clear of a static backline.
To their enormous credit, Reading – workmanlike throughout -The home finished the match with eleven academy graduates on the field, while the Hammers again handed minutes to a number of their squad.
West Ham United return to action on Saturday, July 24 when they face Celtic at Parkhead (3pm).
