West Ham United 3-0 Durham
West Ham United eased to a three-goal victory over Durham to book an FA Women’s Continental Cup semi-final date with London rivals Chelsea at the Chigwell Construction Stadium.
West Ham dominated the early stages with Maz Pacheco and Laura Vetterlein asking questions from the left, while Durham – unbeaten in the Championship and looking likely promotion contenders – sat deep, content with conceding possession and soaking up the East Londoners pressure.
Indeed, the visitors tactic appeared sound, as West Ham struggled to make any real headway. Adriana Leon offered the first meaningful attempt ten minutes before the interval – Molly Sharpe then firing wide as Durham swiftly responded.
Sarah Robson drew a superb one-handed save from the Hammers Australian stopper, Mackenzie Arnold, as Durham grew in momentum. But with half-time approaching West Ham snatched the lead. Emily Van Egmond hooking beyond Hannah Reid after Durham had failed to deal with the initial danger.
Within five minutes the tie appeared dead. Katerina Svitkova was on hand to slot home from six yards, this after Vetterlein had scurried clear down the left and centred West Ham in complete control.
Reid brilliantly denied substitute Matha Thomas a third and then dealt with another attempt from Cecile Redisch. Adriana Leon was next to try her luck – the Durham keeper using her feet to good effect, rebuffing the Canadian from close range.
However, Reid was powerless to prevent substitute Hawa Cissoko knocking in a late third to cap a superb cameo performance. West Ham United return to FA Women’s Super League action on Sunday, January 24 when they face Arsenal at Boreham Wood FC (Noon).
